Who we are
DriveTrain is a driving school run by Steve Darwin, a sole trader based in St Helens. Steve Darwin is the controller of your personal information. If you have any questions, WhatsApp or call 07789 882884.
What we collect and why
- Enquiries. When you call or WhatsApp us (the enquiry form opens WhatsApp), we keep your name, contact details and what you tell us, so we can reply. Lawful basis: taking steps at your request before entering a contract.
- Pupils. If you book lessons we also keep your date of birth, driving licence details, pick-up address, lesson notes and payment records. We need these to teach you safely, book tests and run the business. Lawful basis: contract, and legal obligation for tax and accounting records.
- Signed lesson terms. When you sign our lesson terms online we keep your name, mobile number, date of birth, the name you typed to sign, which version of the terms you agreed to, the date and time, your IP address and the type of device and browser you used. This is our record of what you agreed to, in case of a disagreement about cancellations, missed lessons or payment. Lawful basis: contract, and legitimate interests in being able to show what was agreed.
- Parents or guardians. For pupils under 18 we may keep a parent or guardian's name and contact details. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in being able to contact the person responsible for a young pupil.
We never sell your information or use it for marketing without asking you first.
Who we share it with
Only the people needed to provide lessons:
- the DVSA, when booking or managing your driving test
- services that run this website and store records on our behalf
- WhatsApp (Meta), if you choose to contact us that way, under their own privacy policy
- our accountant or HMRC, for financial records
Some of these providers may store data outside the UK. Where they do, they use legal safeguards such as UK-approved contract terms.
How long we keep it
- Enquiries that don't lead to lessons: up to 12 months.
- Pupil records and signed terms: 6 years after your last lesson, in case of a dispute or a tax query.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
